#simplytravels: Guide to South Devon

Salcombe in South Devon is a typical English seaside town, complete with boutiques, art galleries and ice cream shops. Plan your perfect vacation with our at-a-glance guide to South Devon.

Salcombe Beach

The best beach

When the weather is nice you’ll want to spend lazy hours on the beach, and the best in the area is Mill Bay beach in East Portlemouth. You’ll have to take the short ferry ride from Salcombe across the estuary to get there, but it’s well worth it for the golden sands and sparkling waters (plus the ferry ride takes less than 2 minutes!) At the end of the day the Ferry Inn by the ferry stop is a great place to enjoy a drink.Ferry Inn, Salcombe

If you want to explore

The best part of vacationing on the English coast is spending your time on the water. Renting a boat is the perfect way to explore hard-to-reach hidden beaches and tiny coves. And if you like to keep active you can go paddle boarding or kayaking.Sailing in South Devon

What to eat

Salcombe is traditionally a fishing town and has an active crabbing industry, so make sure to sample the fresh locally-caught seafood in the town’s restaurants. For a more low-key experience you can behave like the locals and dine al fresco by the harbour with traditional fish and chips followed by ice cream.

What to drink

Salcombe is all about the gin, and you can enjoy the refreshing Salcombe Gin “Start Point” in the distillery where they make it. Salcombe Gin is sold in every bar in town, but it’s not the only option available. Even the traditional English pubs are gin specialists with extensive gin menus and a wide range of tonics. It’s basically the perfect town for a gin enthusiast!

If you want a souvenir

You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to boutiques selling fashion and luxury homewares. The most interesting brand in town is Will Bees Bespoke where they handcraft unique luxury bags and accessories. The store is also their workshop, which overlooks the estuary. And they will customise your leather items with your name or initials while you wait.
